Meaning of Freedom Day discussed

Jeppe Boys held a Freedom Day celebration assembly on April 29. Learners shared what Freedom Day means to them.

Thato Mtshali
“Freedom Day means unity and one nation. This country suffered so much and on this day we can unite despite colour or race and appreciate this day as a nation.”

Nompumelelo Makhaba and Nandi Zulu
“Freedom Day to us means power, peace, pride and passion. Celebrate who we are and not be apologetic about it. Freedom day is to remember and honour those who died fighting for us to be here today.”

Nokukhanya Hlatshwayo
“Freedom Day to me means celebrating my ancestors who fought for us to be able to share spaces that they were not allowed to be in. It means I can express myself and be proud of who I am.”

Sinqobile Mbutho
“Freedom Day means to remember and celebrate what our forefathers fought for. Lives were lost for us to enjoy the freedom of choosing what we like today. We should never forget how this freedom came into existence.”

Mqondiso Mququ
“Freedom Day to me means appreciating being black and not living in fear of being ill-treated because of the colour of my skin. We may not be free from other things that make life difficult but with small steps we will get there, as we still have a long way to go.
