UPDATE: No criminal charges in dog case

Sebenza SAPS has confirmed that a pet owner went to the police station to open a case of extortion after her dog went missing last week.

Sebenza SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Sharon Tsotsotso said, “After gathering information of what happened, we could not open a case because there was no element of a crime.

“According to the man who had been accused, he came across a dog that was trapped in a wire or grass on the side of the road.

“He freed the dog and got into a taxi taking the dog with him. While on the way home to Tembisa, he realised that the dog had an identity tag with contact details of the owner,” said Tsotsotso.

The man called the owner to let her know he had the dog and wanted to set up a meeting to return her dog.

“The following day, the man called the owner and asked how much was the reward for the dog. The owner said she was willing to give him R400 as a reward but the man wanted R3 000 as his reward. The owner of the dog then went to the police station to open a case of extortion.

“It was wrong for the man who found the dog to ask for that amount of money but there was no crime committed,” said Tsotsotso.
