Following the announcement, the NEWS met with White and van Niekerk to discuss their achievements.

White (16) and van Niekerk (17) said being selected for the Gauteng team is “great”.

The announcement was made four weeks ago.

“There were really good players at the trials last year,” said White, a pitcher for Edenvale.

“It’s an honour to have been selected.”

White and van Niekerk have both been selected for the Gauteng team numerous times.

“I’m glad to be in the Gauteng team this year,” said van Niekerk.

“It’s my last year in junior baseball and I want it to end on a high note.”

In order to make the team, the duo had to put in hours of practice.

Training two times a week the pair often have little time for anything else.

Van Niekerk said in his spare time he enjoys staying healthy by going to the gym.

Mitchell van Niekerk and Jaryd White, under – 18 players for the Edenvale Imps, were recently selected to be part of the under – 18 Gauteng provincial team.

When White or van Niekerk are not on the baseball field they are hard at work at Jeppe Boys.

“Everyone at the club puts in a lot of effort and time into baseball,” said White.

“Everyone is a family and the friendship amongst the team is good.”

White and van Niekerk are set to participate in the NBC between March 31 and April 3.

The senior’s championships will be held between April 4 and 7.
